AvH Foundation

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

We promote academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany.

  • Our research fellowships and research awards allow you to come to Germany to work on a research project you have chosen yourself together with a host and collaborative partner.

  • If you are a scientist or scholar from Germany you can profit from our support and carry out a research project abroad as a guest of one of more than 29,000 Humboldt Foundation alumni worldwide - the Humboldtians.

  • As an intermediary organisation for German foreign cultural and educational policy we promote international cultural dialogue and academic exchange.

What is important to us?

If you would like to become a member of the Humboldt Family, only one thing counts: your own excellent performance. There are no quotas, neither for individual countries, nor for particular academic disciplines. Our selection committees comprise academics from all fields of specialisation and they make independent decisions, based solely on the applicant’s academic record. We support people, not projects. After all, even in times of increasing teamwork, it is the individual’s ability and dedication that are decisive for academic success.

  • Become an Humboldtian

Whether you are a young postdoctoral researcher at the beginning of your academic career, an experienced, established academic, or even a world authority in your discipline - our research fellowships and research awards offer you sponsorship tailored to you and your career situation.

Become a host in Germany

Every Humboldtian needs an academic host. Become a host and encourage your young, collaborative partners from abroad to apply for a Humboldt Foundation research fellowship for a research stay at your institute, or nominate a cutting-edge researcher of your choice for a Humboldt Research Award. The fellowship includes an allowance for research costs towards financing equipment, research assistance, administrative costs and so on. It helps you and your guest researcher to create optimum conditions for fruitful cooperation.

Concept Note of the Kolleg

  1. Intellectual Background

Definition of Cultural Heritage?

Cultural heritage (CH) is the codified ways of life, whether as physical manifestations or intangible traditions, that are passed down from one generation to the next in a group or a society. As the definition already has suggested, CH may have two aspects: physical and symbolic. A third aspect may be included, natural heritage, which encompasses significant landscapes and biodiversity. UNESCO’s involvement and concern with CH has over the years contributed to the elaboration of the concept of CH, and the sophistication of the instruments related to its study and conservation. The concept went beyond the tangible manifestation of culture exemplified in architecture, monuments, landscapes, books, works of art, and artifacts, to include intangible expressions of ways living , such as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe or the knowledge and skills that produce traditional crafts. The fragility of intangible expressions culture in a globalized world poses a special problem for safeguarding and maintaining CH.  The significance of intangible heritage lies in the facts that it promotes understanding of different communities, opens new horizons for intercultural dialogue, and bolsters respect for other ways of life.

CH, if considered economically, can be a catalyst for sustainable development and growth. It can tourist with recreation opportunities, while mitigating the heavy burnt of globalism on indigenous communities by offering them alternative ways to make a living. CH can provide stimulating education and learning, and foster cultural identity and a sense of place.

The complexity of approaching the special problems of CH lends itself to an interdisciplinary study from various fields of research. The aim of the Kolleg is to discuss the contribution of interdisciplinary and interrelated sciences in CH research, its preservation and promotion to reconstruct humanity's past to understand the evolution of human culture.
